Artist Statement

4our Thousand Bodies is a cinematic journey of moving pictures and sounds that aims to move beyond the portrayal of black and brown bodies in media as a vessel of historical trauma. Black bodies are more than a collection of trauma and by inviting the audience to challenge their preconceptions and to actively participate in rewriting narratives that have defined the black and brown communities. The participants in the film are not subjects with casted with an eye of colonization but rather independent, strong individuals who have helped us to to reframe the context of them as a way to reclaim and rewrite a suffocating narrative. The film’s purpose is to inspire dialogue, empathy, and a collective effort to rectify the narratives that have shaped our understanding of identity and resilience.
